Buda is an island maritime waterway forming one of the wetlands best preserved of Spain, is located in the eastern end of Delta de l·Ebre, and belongs to municipality of Sant Jaume d·Enveja, in the comarca of Montsià. With 1,000 hectares and about 5 km. in length, is the largest island of Catalonia.
Is of alluvial origin since it has been formed from the sediments that leaves the river Ebro just before its mouth. Its shape is that of an inverted triangle with the vertex south, and is surrounded by the two arms of the river, the main (the gola de Levante) north, that separates it from the Illa de Sant Antoni, and secondary (the gola of Migjorn) west. Al This linda with Buddha Beach bathed by the Mediterranean Sea, and culminates at the eastern end with cape of Tortosa, near which rose the famous lighthouse of Buddha.
Inside the island are found the lagoons of Calaix Gran (or de Dalt) and the Calaix de la Mar (or de Baix), which are habitat of a very important number of bird species.
In the year 1924 the Buda Island was acquired by the current owner of the northern half, the family Borés, the other being southern half property of Departament de Medi Ambient of the Generalitat de Catalunya. Came to have about 200 inhabitants during the decade of 1950, when around forty families were installed there to grow rice. In its interior we find the masía built in the late nineteenth century, with a chapel that made also double school. In those times were celebrated and organized these celebrations older and even created a football team. Currently, however, despite that Contd. growing rice, in Buda only remain two marriages and higher.
